Thursday, October 6th, 2022, President Joe Biden announced he is pardoning all Americans convicted of simple marijuana possession under federal law.US officials estimate this executive action will benefit 6,500 people with prior federal convictions for simple possession of marijuana and thousands more in the District of Columbia.“Sending people to prison for possessing marijuana has upended too many lives and incarcerated people for conduct that many states no longer prohibit,” the president said in a statement made earlier today. “We classify marijuana at the same level as heroin—and more serious than fentanyl. It makes no sense.”Mr. Biden said he will call upon all state governors to issue their own marijuana pardons and that he is also directing Secretary of Health and Human Services, Xavier Becerra, and Attorney General Merrick Garland to review how cannabis is classified under federal law.“Too many lives have been upended because of our failed approach to marijuana,” Biden added. “It’s time that we right these wrongs.”
